Keir Starmer says the future of Greenland is \u2018for nobody else\u2019 in Donald T.r.um.p swip.<\/p>\n

The US President says he \u2018needs\u2019 Greenland as a matter of national security<\/p>\n

Sir Keir Starmer has taken aim at Donald T.r.um.p as he weighed in on the US President\u2019s plea to take over Greenland.<\/p>\n

Speaking to GB News, the Prime Minister told Political Editor Christopher Hope that the future of the territory is for \u201cnobody else\u201d but them.<\/p>\n

Mr T.r.um.p has set his sights on Greenland once again, claiming he \u201cneeds\u201d the land as a matter of \u201cnational security\u201d.<\/p>\n

Advocating for the Danish territory, he said: \u201cWe do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pressed by Christopher on what he would do if Mr T.r.um.p \u201cinvades Greenland\u201d, Sir Keir told GB News: \u201cWell, the future of Greenland is for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark, and for Greenland and the future of Denmark only.<\/p>\n

\u201cDenmark is a very close ally of the UK, both in Europe and in Nato, and it\u2019s very important that we\u2019re clear about the principles applicable to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreenland and the Kingdom of Denmark must determine the future of Greenland and nobody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grilled on his inability to \u201ccondemn\u201d Donald T.r.um.p\u2019s actions in Venezuela, the Prime Minister said there needs to be a \u201cpeaceful transition\u201d to democracy.<\/p>\n

USA has single handedly wrecked the grip on Venezuela by China, Russia and Iran who all. had nefarious plans for South America. Their dictators, and they are dictators in the true sense of the word, cancelling or blatant cheating in elections, if any are allowed) will not be sleeping easy from now on.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sir Keir said: \u201cWell, the position of this Government is that what we need in Venezuela is a peaceful transition to democracy. That was our position before this weekend, it remains our position.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President was illegitimate and caused untold misery across Venezuela.<\/p>\n

\u201cInternational law is the framework, is the anchor or the benchmark against which we judge the actions of all of the Governments.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cAnd it is, of course, for the US to justify the action that it has taken. It is not straightforward, it is complicated.<\/p>\n

<\/small>Asked by Christopher if he believes Labour critics of Venezuela and Donald T.r.um.p are \u201cwrong\u201d, the Prime Minister told GB News: \u201cWell, look, people will take different positions on this, but I think the vast majority of Labour voters and supporters, in fact, the vast majority of people across the country would say the most important thing is that peaceful transition to democracy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been years in the waiting, and now we need a period of stabilisation. But we mustn\u2019t lose sight of the fact that the most important thing is that transition to democracy in Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grilled on the Government\u2019s decision to U-turn on the family farm tax threshold, Sir Keir declared that he \u201clistened\u201d to the \u201cconcerns\u201d of union leaders about the issues surrounding the threshold.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir explained: \u201cThe principle of applying inheritance tax to farms is obviously the right principle, but I listened to those that had concerns about where the threshold was, including the president and the NFU (National Farmers\u2019 Union) and the ex-president of the NFU.\"Keir<\/p>\n

Sir Keir told GB News that Denmark is a \u2018close ally\u2019 to Britain<\/p>\n

\u201cI listened carefully to what they had to say and determined that we should adjust the threshold, not the principle, but the threshold, and that was the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about whether the Government plans to U-turn on taxing pubs next, Sir Keir said: \u201cWell, in relation to business rates, we\u2019re working with the sector, particularly in hospitality.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously there were reductions in place because of Covid, which were going to come to an end. There are then transitional provisions to help the overall rating levels is going down.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cBut I do acknowledge for pubs and others that the revaluation means that they will struggle in relation to the business rates applicable to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re working with them and also other measures \u2013 they want more freedom for licensing, they want more freedom to actually open for longer, and we\u2019re very open to that discussion with them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
